Galaxy S25 lets you choose your default voice assistant: Gemini or Bixby

Galaxy S25 assistant Gemini Bixby

At Galaxy Unpacked 2025, Samsung highlighted that Gemini is now the default assistant on the Galaxy S25 series, a change it has seen in nearly eight years. Now, Samsung has confirmed that either Gemini or Bixby can be activated as a default assistant on Galaxy S25 depending on the use case/what is being asked.

You can access Google’s Gemini AI by simply long-pressing the Galaxy S25 series’ side (power) button for the default digital assistant. This action was previously limited to Bixby, which has been the default digital assistant on Samsung phones since 2017.

Despite Samsung’s efforts to make Bixby an assistant user use, including giving it its button on some older phones, it never became as popular as Google Assistant or Gemini.

Now, the Galaxy S25 series lets you choose the best AI assistant between Gemini and Bixby. By default, Gemini can be accessed by long-pressing the side button on the Samsung Galaxy S25. Now, depending on your settings, long-pressing the power button summons Gemini, Bixby, or the power menu. You can assign anyone under the Settings > Side Button > Log press.

In addition to YouTube, Google Maps, Gmail, and Spotify, Samsung also integrated some of its stock apps – Samsung Calendar, Samsung Notes, Samsung Clock, and Samsung Reminders – into the Gemini.

Bixby with One UI 7 and Galaxy S25 series

Bixby has been upgraded with the Galaxy S25 and One UI 7, which can remember your last conversation and take that into account when accepting your next command.

For example, you can say

  • What’s on my schedule tomorrow?
  • Can you add garage cleaning at 5 PM?
  • Take a photo in 5 seconds
  • Make the screen brighter
  • Set language as Indian English

Gemini and Bixby can both be activated depending on the use case / what is being asked. Gemini and / or Bixby is activated depending on what you ask your device to do. For example, if you’re looking for a restaurant – Gemini will be activated because it’s a search function, but if you ask to add something to your Samsung Calendar, Bixby will activate because it’s a Samsung app:  Samsung said to Android Authority

Galaxy S22 Android 16

Samsung is internally preparing the One UI 8 beta for Galaxy devices, alongside the stable One UI 7 rollout. After the Galaxy S25, Galaxy S24, and Galaxy S23, new information also indicates that Samsung is already testing the Android 16-based One UI 8 on the Galaxy S22 series.

A reliable tipster has spotted a new One UI 8 build for the Galaxy S22 series, indicating that Samsung is actively working on the next version.

According to the information, the Galaxy S22 Ultra has been spotted on Geekbench, internally running on Android 16-based One UI 8. It scored 1581 and 3680 points in single-core and multi-core tests, respectively, which shows promising performance for a smartphone with the next One UI software.

It is worth noting that this benchmark score is based on an early build of One UI 8 (build S908USQU8GYCB), which only gives information about how the Galaxy S22 Ultra will perform with the upcoming software version.

Notably, Google recently confirmed that Android 16 will be available on Galaxy devices this summer. Developments indicate that the new One UI 8 will be introduced alongside the Galaxy Z Flip 7 and Z Fold 7 foldable phones in July.

Rumours also suggest that the Korean tech giant may start the One UI 8 beta programme in the third week of May 2025. Initially, similar to One UI 7, it will reportedly be available to a limited number of Galaxy users in select countries.

At the moment, we are not completely sure about the One UI 8 beta program release date in May 2025, as Samsung has not officially confirmed it yet. Stay tuned for more details.
