One UI 8 (Android 16) to support third-party lock screen widgets on Samsung devices
Android 16 may launch new important features to enhance external lock screen customization. Now, Google is planning to add third-party app widget support on the lock screen with Android 16. Meanwhile, we expect Samsung to bring this third-party widgets feature for the lock screen in One UI 8 for Galaxy phones.
Furthermore, the company is trying to make its upcoming OS a great upgrade for every device, including phones and tablets.
Google recently announced that with Android 16 QPR1, widgets are now available on your Pixel tablet lock screen! Also, the company has announced that the feature will be added to AOSP by the summer of 2025, which means it will soon be available for all Android phones.
Lock screen widgets enable users to create a personalized, always-on experience. For example, whether you want to easily manage smart home devices like lights and thermostats or create a dashboard for quick access and control of important information.
For your information, let us tell you that One UI lets you add widgets to your lock screen, but till now, these widgets were only available from some of Samsung’s apps. Furthermore, One UI 8, based on Android 16, can bring third-party widgets to the lock screen for Galaxy devices.
This meant that the One UI 8 update could let Samsung users add lock screen widgets from apps other than Samsung’s own apps.
Earlier rumors indicated that Samsung might release One UI 8 first for Galaxy devices this year, skipping One UI 7.1 and One UI 7.1.1. Plus, One UI 8 will arrive sooner than previously thought.
Apart from this, Samsung has also reportedly started internal beta testing of the Android 16-based One UI 8 software system for some flagship Galaxy smartphones.

After the Galaxy S24 series, Samsung has today resumed the rollout of One UI 7 based on the Android 15 update for the Galaxy Z Flip 6, Galaxy Z Fold 6, and Galaxy Z Fold 6 SE. It is worth noting that the Korean tech giant had halted the rollout a few days ago due to a serious bug discovered in the initial update, so it is now rolling out a new firmware that will fix this issue.
Samsung has started rolling out the new One UI 7 update for the Galaxy Z Flip 6, Z Fold 6, and Fold 6 SE. Initially available in South Korea, the new One UI 7 build will go live in more markets soon. This build is a more refined build than the initial build and includes fixes for system improvements.
Samsung Galaxy Z Flip 6, Z Fold 6, and Fold 6 SE users can recognize it by the build number ending with BYD9.
Your Galaxy foldable device might have also received the new build. But you can check for the update manually in Settings > Software update. Click on Download and install so that your phone can receive the new OTA.
The Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 7 has now appeared on Geekbench, revealing that the company is carrying out pre-launch tests and preparations for its new device. The latest listing also solves the chipset mystery that has been in rumours for a long time.
According to the Geekbench 6.4 listing, the Galaxy Z Fold 7 US variant with model number SM-F966U achieved 3022 points on single-core and 9307 points on multi-core tests.
The US variant of the Galaxy Z Fold 7 has appeared on Geekbench with a Snapdragon 8 Elite chip. Also, the phone is expected to run on Android 16-based One UI 8 operating system
Being a flagship folding handset, all these things sound quite good. Nevertheless, the actual performance will only be known once the device is officially launched in the consumer market. Inputs reveal that the chipset is clocked at 3.53 GHz base frequency.
Apart from this, the Korean tech giant can launch the Galaxy Z Flip 7 and Z Fold 7 around July this year. Also, an affordable flip model can also be introduced along with both the devices.
Samsung halted the One UI 7 rollout for the Galaxy S24 series a few days ago, as a serious bug was found in the initial firmware. Samsung has resumed the rollout of the One UI 7-based Android 15 update for the Galaxy S24 series today, which should fix the issue.
The new One UI 7 update for Samsung Galaxy S24, Galaxy S24 Plus, and Galaxy S24 Ultra smartphones can be verified through One UI build version with S921NKSU4BYD9, S926NKSU4BYD9, and S928NKSU4BYD9.
The latest beta update fixes issues that users encountered in the initial One UI 7 update to provide a better experience. According to the changelog, the update brings functional improvements or new functions.
