Google Android may copy Samsung One UI stackable widgets feature
With One UI 5, Samsung allows Galaxy phone and tablet users to stack widgets on the home screen. Almost two years later, Google is now considering adding stackable widgets to Android.
Stack widgets allow one widget to be placed on top of another on the home screen on Galaxy devices running Android 13-based One UI 5 and later. This feature only saves space and makes it easier to access multiple widgets.
Recently, Google’s Android development team held an Ask Me Anything session about widgets on its YouTube channel. When asked about stackable widgets, the team said that since some brands like Samsung are already offering it, Google is considering adding it to the Android Open Source Project (AOSP).
The feature is quite popular in Galaxy smartphones with One UI, and it recently launched for global users with the One UI 5 release.
As the name suggests, Stacked Widget allows you to add home screen widgets on top of each other. Samsung’s latest One UI 7 has made the functionality of the Stack widget even better. A wide range of Galaxy phones will receive the improved functionality with the stable update in April 2025, starting with the Galaxy S24 series.
It is worth noting that Android 16 does not have this feature, nor has any evidence of it emerged; however, a future version of Android will bring it to Pixel smartphones.
