Samsung two One UI updates

Samsung might launch two major Android and One UI updates in 2025 for Galaxy devices. Google usually releases a stable version of a new version of Android in the second half of a year. For instance, the US tech firm introduced Android 13, Android 14, and Android 15 in August 2022, October 2023, and October 2024, respectively. In 2025 the strategy will change, as Google plans to launch the Android 16 stable version in Q2 of 2025.

On the flip side, Samsung Galaxy users still waiting for the One UI 7 stable update, which is set to launch Q1 of 2025 with Galaxy S25 series.

As above mention, the One UI 7 stable rollout start early next year. On November 19, 2024, Google released the Android 16 Developer Preview, so Samsung can start working on it sooner to integrate it with One UI 8 and offer it to Galaxy devices most likely in Q3 rather than in Q4.

Due to the delay in the One UI 7 stable rollout and Google releasing the Android 16 much sooner than usual, Samsung may launch two major Android and One UI updates in 2025 for Galaxy devices.

Two Android and One UI releases in 2025

  • Android 15-based One UI 7: Q1 2025
  • Android 16-based One UI 8: Q3/Q4 2025

One UI 7 Beta

As per recent rumors, Samsung could release the One UI 7 Beta 3 for the Galaxy S24 lineup soon and the beta program will run for around two months, with the stable release expected in February 2025.

One UI 8 Beta

Usually, Samsung releases a beta program of the new version of One UI after Google releases the Stable Android version for Pixel devices except for the One UI 7 Beta. Google plans to release the stable version of Android 16 sometime after April 2025 unless some unforeseen issue causes delays. So, we can likely see the One UI 8 beta in Q2 rather than Q3, 2025.

Android 16 One UI 8 release

Google plans to launch the Android 16 public Beta update in January 2025, followed by the final version in Q2 of 2025. So, Galaxy devices may receive the One UI 8 software update in the second half of next year.

One UI 8 (Android 16) could bring Triple split screen for better multitasking to Galaxy phones, tablets

Android 16 triple-split-screen

Last month, Google released the second developer preview of the Android 16 operating system and now its features are being released separately. Now a report has revealed that Android 16 can take multitasking to game-changing for foldable and tablet users with a ‘triple-split-screen’ mode.

Mishal Rahman (via Android Authority) has found a code in Android 16 DP2 that suggests that Google is working on a triple-split-screen mode for tablets and the tool might debut with the next OS, Android 16. Hence, we expect Samsung to adopt this feature in Galaxy phones and tablets with the One UI 8 update. Interestingly, this feature is inspired by OnePlus’s OxygenOS.

Notably, OnePlus introduced Open Canvas, a ‘triple-split-screen’ mode with its first foldable “OnePlus Open”. It is a multitasking feature that enables users to use three apps simultaneously on the screen. Here, two apps occupy 90% of the screen while the third app occupies 10%. You can see the picture below.

If you want to maximize the third app, just tap on it. The larger window will be about 10% larger than the first one. One can easily switch between apps, drag and drop, or use a four-finger pinch gesture to view all three apps.

The report reveals that the three apps were not launched simultaneously during testing, as they were in the development stage. Still, the UI hints at a preview of three locations where the app windows can be placed: left, center, or right. You can see this in action in the video here.

Google is also working on a useful triple split-screen mode for foldables and tablets with Android 16. The game-changing feature will likely support the new aspect ratio option for easier and more convenient multitasking.

On the other hand, Samsung fans are eagerly waiting for the One UI 7 coming this month. Also, a well-known publication has also mysteriously searched some apps and found “One UI 8” in several places. This code evidence suggests that Samsung has started internal work on the latest version of One UI 8, which is likely to be based on Android 16.
